Mutant dung beetles attack a family on a remote Pennsylvania highway. Yes, it’s as disgusting as it sounds.

Dung Beetles is the twenty-seventh horror short story in the Land of Fright™ series of short horror stories. The Land of Fright™ series is intended for mature audiences.

Get In Your Car, You Damn Fool

Suddenly, one of the other dung beetles on the side of the road erupted in an explosive mash of head, guts, legs, and shell. Then another one erupted into a mess of blood and guts.

“Get in your car!” Charlene heard a voice shout.

Charlene glanced around but could not find the source of the voice.

“Get in your car, you damn fool!”

Up. The voice was coming from somewhere above her. Charlene glanced up the rocky cliff wall that lined the road. She saw the glint of a rifle, and then she saw the man holding it. He put the gun to his eye and fired. Charlene started as she felt the bullet whizzing past her head and heard it whistle past her ear. Then she heard a very loud splat and she spun to see a dung beetle flopping on the ground only a few feet away from her. She shoved the back door shut and scrambled back into the front seat, pulling the door closed behind her.

A beetle slammed into the driver’s side window with incredible force just as Charlene closed the door. The window cracked, but did not shatter. Charlene looked up to see another beetle flying towards the car. It folded its long wings beneath its shell and dive-bombed straight for the glass, picking up speed as it descended. It splattered against the glass. Another dung beetle crashed into the window. The cracks in the window widened.

More gunfire rang out, shot after shot echoing in the narrow canyon.

Charlene sat quietly in the car, forcing herself to stay calm, not knowing where to go, or what to do. She adjusted her glasses and tried not to scream.

Dung Beetles A Short Tale of Terror Land of Fright Book 27 edition by Jack O'Donnell Literature Fiction eBooks

I didn't think it was quite as good as some of the other Land of Fright short stories, but Dung Beetles was definitely the grossest of the ones I've read so far. Basically a girl is driving to college, and has her mother and younger brother in the car with her. A sign on the road tells them to listen to a radio channel, they do but ignore it's message to turn around or they will die. The younger brother really needs to lay some cable, but the sister refuses to stop and let him unload, even though he explains he's crowning. Soon a bug enters the car, and attacks the brother, he screams as it climbs inside his jeans and inside him. This is the start of their nightmare that will also have them dealing with a simpleton local who has a not the brightest plan in the world to get rid of these invaders, and isn't taking no for an answer of them helping him. He also expects some happy time.

Nicely done butt clenching horror! Loved the slightly demented concept. Behold, the new and improved Bung Beetle. Recommended reading for the child in all of us.
